How Does the Travel Budget Calculator Work?

The calculator adds up your expected expenses across seven categories. Food is entered as a daily amount and multiplied by your trip length; everything else is a trip total. The result includes the three numbers travelers actually need: the grand total, the fair per-person share, and the per-day burn rate you can compare against your destination's typical prices.

How much should I budget per day for a trip?

Daily costs vary enormously by destination — a comfortable day in Southeast Asia can cost less than a hostel bed in Switzerland. A useful approach is to research typical hotel and meal prices for your destination, enter them here, and let the calculator show your realistic per-day figure.

Should I add a buffer to my travel budget?

Most experienced travelers add 10–20% on top of their calculated budget for unexpected costs: taxis when tired, entrance fees, tips, or a spontaneous activity. You can add this in the Other expenses field.
